Max is a photographer with a particular interest in intangible cultural heritage. He has undertaken a range of commissions including work for: The Harrogate Band; isabelleRANDALL Couture; West Yorkshire Brass; and private functions. His personal work usually explores societal memories, traditions, skills, values and beliefs. This has included looking at: traces of cultures in the landscape; portraiture; built heritage; and undertaking social documentary work. A particular area of interest is brass banding - particularly documenting not just the players, but audiences, the culture, camaraderie, challenges and triumphs.

Max undertakes extensive research then allows a personal and emotional response to guide his execution of each project. The resulting images allow viewers to reflect and engage with the topic without directing them to a particular standpoint or interpretation. Max likes to present his work in tangible forms such as exhibitions, prints and handmade photobooks.

Max has exhibited extensively, including at:

  • Gray's School of Art;
  • Inverewe Garden;
  • Ilkley Manor House;
  • Cliffe Castle;
  • Leeds Arts University;
  • Victoria Quarter shopping arcade; and
  • Sunny Bank Mills Gallery.
